In most cases, acting quickly is the key to removing the stain completely. Different stains respond better to different treatments, so knowing what action to take can spare you a lot of frustration. Here’s how to remove a few of the most common carpet stains.
Drink Stains
First, remove as much liquid as possible by blotting the spot with a clean cloth. Then, mix water, vinegar, and dish detergent together in a spray bottle, spritz the area, and then blot it with a clean, dye-free cloth. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
Pet Stains
Before treating, remove as much debris as you can and sponge up as much liquid as possible. If the stain has already dried, then saturate it with water before moving forward. Then, use a carpet stain cleaning product that is formulated specifically for pet stains, spot testing in an inconspicuous area first to ensure that it can be safely used on your flooring. This special cleaner will remove the stain effectively while neutralizing the area to discourage your pet from returning to it.
Blood Stains
When it comes to removing them, blood stains are unique in that you must use cold water to get them out. Warm or hot water will cause the blood to coagulate and permeate the carpet fibers.
Fill a spray bottle with cold water and add two teaspoons of a grease-fighting dish detergent. Saturate the site of the stain with the water, then use a paper towel or white rag to sponge it up, gently dabbing until the stain is removed. If the stain persists, dissolve a powdered stain remover containing sodium percarbonate (such as Oxiclean) into warm water, mix it with cold water, saturate the stain, and blot until the stain is gone. It may take several attempts to remove all the blood, but with persistence, you’ll be successful.
